To the left is a list of local NWA area music stores that carry instruments
and supplies necessary for lessons and classes. Each student will need
to have an instrument with a case and tuner, preferable the intellitouch
tuner, which clips on to the instrument so noise in the room does not
interfere with tuning. Those who find a full 4/4 size instrument too large
may opt to start with a 1/2 or 3/4 size instrument. Below is some information
to help you shop around and compare prices for these supplies:

are requested to play on a classical guitar, which is an acoustic (not electric)
instrument with a hollow body and nylon strings, and use a footrest to support
the instrument. Better quality instruments have a solid (not laminated)
Cedar or Spruce top. Guitar Center
in Fayetteville carries the full size Yamaha
CG151C for $349, or for smaller students, the 3/4-size Cordoba
Cadet classical guitar for $259. Both are classical guitars with
solid Cedar top. Their guitarist's footrest
is $9.99 and intellitouch
PT2 turner is $29.95.
Saied's
Fayetteville store carries a 4/4 solid Cedar top Presentation
La Patrie classical guitar ($469), Intellitouch
PT2 tuner ($39), Footrest
($20) and Case. Saied's also carries the Yamaha
CGS-103 classical guitar, a 3/4 size instrument for smaller students
(solid Spruce top), for $149.
Violinist & Cellists
may choose to rent
a violin
or cello
outfit, which includes a bow and case, at Saied's
Music. Saied's also sells rosin for violin
and cello,
violin shoulder rests by Resonans
and Kuns (preferred), and the Intellitouch
PT2 tuner.
Janet Davis Music
carries a Cremona
SV-175 violin outfit (various sizes) for $186, Kuns
shoulder rest for $26.95 and sells the Intellitouch
PT2 tuner for $29.95.
Shar's online store carries
violin rosin
and cello rosin,
as well as the end pin "strap"
or "stop"
cellists will need to hold their end pin in place, the Intellitouch
PT2 tuner and several choices for a "Kun" shoulder
rest.
Prodigy has reasonable
online prices for student violins
and cellos
as well as a rental
program.
Strings
need to be replaced once or twice a year. In addition to the local stores,
some good online sources for strings are Prodigy
, D'Addario and Shar.
Strings I recommend for violin are Helicore
or Prelude,
and for classical guitar Pro-Arte.
